Earth Observation for waste monitoring (legal and illegal landfill sites) In
partnership with Planetek Italia and EBA we
will develop products and services for monitoring landfill sites based on
feature recognition from high resolution optical and SAR imagery as well
as surface deformation monitoring using SAR interferometry. 1)
Develop service for mapping illegal land fill sites Use
Earth Observation methods to find areas where illegal waste is buried e.g.
use hyperspectral data to look at the effect on vegetation; use SAR
interferometry to measure changes in elevation to a few centimetres to
locate buried waste through detection of subsidence; the detection of
illegal tyre dumps 2)
Monitoring existing legal landfill sites Monitoring
of regular land fill sites including the characterisation of waste types
on specific sites to ensure compliance with licence and regulatory
conditions; early detection of structural failure in waste retaining
structures These services will be produced and validated in 5 different trials located in Ireland, Italy and Canada. In addition, the UK Environment Agency has expressed interest in extending the service trials to cover a number of waste dumps in England and Wales.
The
Republic of Ireland
ratified the World Heritage Convention in 1991. The Convention established
the highly prestigious World Heritage List (WHL) which comprises sites of
outstanding universal value to all humankind. The Department of
Environment, Heritage and Local Government is responsible for
submitting nominations for UNESCO World Heritage status and “Periodic
Reporting” relating to the Republic of To date there are two World Heritage Sites (WHS) in the Republic of Ireland. Brú na Bóinne was inscribed onto the World Heritage List in 1993. Skellig Michael was inscribed in 1996. In addition, there are 8 sites on the Republic of Ireland's WHS Tentative List, one of which is Clonmacnoise in County Offaly. The DoEHLG is now preparing a Nomination Document and Management Plan for Clonmacnoise, County Offlay, with a view to submission for WHS inscription. Clonmacnoise is an area of both natural and cultural significance and for this reason will be submitted for inclusion on the WHS List as a cultural landscape. For
